Houston Cemetery

Submitted by: Stanford R. Evans

"Located approx. four miles South of Mackay, ID. In a remote area, I would suggest getting someone from the town of Mackay to tell you how to find it. The cemetery was established about 1885, near the site of the mining town of Houston, Custer Co., Idaho Territory. Custer Co. was derived from Alturus Co. in 1881. After the railroad came to the Lost River Valley in 1903, Houston was abandoned, but the cemetery was used for several years, even after the establishment of the Mackay Cemetery, the earliest grave-stone date being 1888, and the latest being 1987. There are probably a few earlier graves now un-marked. Done from a visual survey of the cemetery by Sanford R. Evans in 1999." - Sanford Evans
